Exoprosopa decora
BEE FLY FAMILY (Bombyliidae)

This fly is approximately 1/2 inch (13 mm) in length. The body is blackish and shiny.  The eyes are large and red. The wings are mostly black with a clear spot at the tip and a clear “snoopy-shaped spot” near the middle.

 

The occurrence is known from a single sighting on 8/20/05 in Fontenelle Forest.  Adults may be seen nectaring on a variety of flowers, especially asters.

 

There are about 43 species in the genus Exoprosopa in North America.  The larvae of this fly feed on the larvae of ground nesting bees, wasps or beetles.
