This mushroom is cup shaped and ranges in size from minute to a little over a ½ inch wide. The top or inner surface is smooth and scarlet red to bright orange in color. It is covered with tiny dark hairs. The margin of the cup has longer, eyelash-like dark hairs that have forked bases(B). It has no stem.

This mushroom lives on rotted wood or on damp soil nearby. In Fontenelle Forest it is fairly common along water in the hollows. It is found from June to November.

This is one of several species that make up the eyelash cups. Many of the species differ only microscopically. This one is distinctive because it is ringed by long dark hairs.
