The Filbertworm Moth has a wingspan of 7/8 inch. The forewing is metallic looking with the ground color being variable from tan to pale brick red to dark brown. There are 2 or 3 dark metallic bands across the wing with the middle one being the widest and most complete. The hindwing is dark grayish brown with light-colored fringes. The last instar larva is about 3/4 inch long. The head is yellowish-brown and the abdomen is gray.
The frequency of occurrence in this area is not known. It was photographed in early September 2012 at Neale Woods coming to artificial lights.
In this area the larvae eat oak acorns. They eat many species of nuts including pecans, beechnuts and, in Oregon, they are a serious pest of hazel nut orchards. There are 47 species of moths in the genus Cydia including the Codling Moth (C. pomonella) and the Mexican Jumping Bean Borer (C. deshaisiana).
