The Friendly Probole has a 1 to 1.5 inch wingspan. It is pale tan with a broad brown margin and other dark brown markings. It is highly variable in pattern and color. All the former species of Probole have recently been lumped together into the one species, Probole amicaria. The caterpillar, Red-cheeked Looper, is a twig or leaf petiole mimic. It is green, tan, brown or red and is less than 1.5 inches when mature. This moth was identified by volunteer experts at the BugGuide website.

The frequency of occurrence is not known, but the individual shown here was photographed at the Fontenelle Nature Center in late August.

The moths come to lights and are also diurnal. The foodplants of the larvae are dogwood and other woody plants. The pupa overwinters.
