A brownish to black insect a little over I inch long (26-33 mm). Legs are fringed with hairs.

Both larvae and adult prey on aquatic insects and fish etc. Found in aquatic environments. This species is usually found in deeper parts of ponds and ditches. We expect it to be common in Fontenelle Forest.

In this genus the body is broadest behind the middle. This species is one of the largest diving beetles. Adults fly to lights.
