This Bee Fly is approximately 1/4 to 3/8 inch (10 mm) in length. It is an overall tannish-gray color. The eyes are large and dark red. The proboscis is very long and black. The antennae are fairly long and sharply pointed. The thorax has a humpbacked shape and is gray. The abdomen is gray and tan and is long and conical shaped. It has short, tan-colored hairs on the thorax, abdomen and at the base of the antennae. The very long, stilt-like legs are tan and brown colored. The wings are clear.
The frequency of occurrence of this genus is not known. The individual shown here was photographed in early August in Fontenelle Forest. Look for them at yellow composite flowers.
There are 23 species in the genus Geron in North America. Flies in this genus are parasitic on moth caterpillars.
