LIMONIID CRANE FLY FAMILY (Limoniidae)

This crane fly is approximately 1/2 inch (13 mm) in length (from front of head to rear of wing). It is black with a blue or green sheen. The yellow halteres are a good identification characteristic.

 

This crane fly is common in Fontenelle Forest and Neale Woods. It has been photographed in early May, early October and early November. They can be found sitting on vegetation, around rotting logs and sometimes on buildings.

 

The larvae live in rotten wood.
