This fly is about 1/2 inch (13 MM) long. It is black with black bristles covering the thorax and abdomen. The face is tan to white with widely spaced eyes for both male and female. This fly was identified with the help of experts at the BugGuide website.
Tachinid flies, in general, are common and widespread. The occurrence of this Gonia species is not known but is thought to be common in our area.
There are 28 species in the genus Gonia and all are very similar in appearance. They are parasitioids of owlet moth caterpillars.
