The total length of the Gray-marked Tortricid is about .50 inch. The forewing is gray-brown with scattered thin, black barring and dark gray bands at the basal, median and subterminal areas. The pattern varies with some individuals having well defined darker markings and others with pale to no markings. The hindwing is plain tan with long tan fringes. D. fragarianus has almost identical forewing markings and cannot be separated from D. basiplagana by photos. However, its range is only in the far western U.S.

The frequency of occurrence is not known. It was photographed once at Neale Woods in early September 2012 coming to artificial lights.

The larvae eat the leaves of oak trees.
