The Hayhurst’s Scallopwing has a wingspan of 1 to 1.25 inches. This diminutive skipper is brown with scalloped edgings on the hindwings. Dorsally, the male is dark brown to blackish. The female is a lighter brown with contrasting dark brown markings and light flecking. Both sexes have small white dots on the forewing and lighter brown terminal bands on the forewings and hindwings. The ventral side of the wings is plain brown. The similar Common Sootywing is mostly black with smooth wing edgings and several white spots on the forewings.
This skipper is uncommon in Fontenelle Forest and Neale Woods. It has been photographed once in Child’s Hollow, Fontenelle Forest in late May. They are usually found sitting on low vegetation or on damp ground.
The mature larva is green with a pink sheen and a brown prothoracic shield. The larvae feed at night on weedy plants including lambsquarters, amaranth and pigweeds.
