OWLET MOTHS (Noctuidae)

The Hemina Pinon moth has a total length of approximately 7/8 inch (20-22 mm). There is a light form and a dark form. The light form (shown here) is a warm brown with darker brown bands in the median and subterminal areas. There is a small black rectangular patch in the median area. The dark form is sooty brown in the inner half of the forewing and with a contrasting pale costa and orbicular and reniform spots. The hindwings are plain brown. The caterpillar is brownish-gray with dorsal black chevrons and often has faint tan to yellow mid-dorsal and subdorsal stripes. It grows to 1.5 inches (4 cm).

 

The frequency of occurrence at Fontenelle Forest and Neale Woods is not known. It has been photographed once at Fontenelle Forest Nature Center in early April 2014. It occurs in woodlands from Missouri and mountains of Georgia to Manitoba and Nova Scotia, Canada. It is more common northward.

 

The larvae eat the leaves of deciduous trees including birch, chokecherry, hickory and oak. It has one generation a year.
