TACHINID FLY FAMILY (Tachinidae)

This Tachinid Fly is approximately .75 inch (20 mm) in length. It has large dark red eyes, wide, black v-shaped antennae and large yellow calypters at the base of the wing. The thorax is black and the abdomen is black with 2 wide yellow bands on the middle segments. The wings are smoky gray with orange at the base. The femurs are reddish-brown, the tibia are yellowish and the tarsii are black with yellow tarsal claws. The last section of the abdomen is flat and turned downward. A diagnostic characteristic is the indented hind margin of the eyes as can be seen in the photo. This fly was identified by expert volunteers at the BugGuide website.

 

The frequency of occurrence of this Tachinid fly at Fontenelle Forest and Neale Woods is not known. It has been photographed once in Fontenelle Forest in late July 2012.

 

There is one species in the genus Hemyda in North America. Flies in the subfamily Phasiinae attack nymphal and adult bugs and beetles. One host for Hemyda aurata is the Spined Soldier Bug, a Predatory Stink Bug.
