This is a small robber fly about 5/8 inch (15 mm) in length. It is mostly brown with a reddish-brown abdomen with black bands. The hunched-back appearance and the long wings extending beyond the abdomen are characteristic of the species. It has large, dark brown eyes and shiny, dark brown legs. This species was identified by volunteer experts at the website BugGuide.

 

It is probably fairly common at Fontenelle Forest and Neale Woods and files in the fall. It first appears about the third week of August and flies until mid-November.

 

There are about 25 species in this genus (Heteropogon) in North America.
