This beetle is 1/3rd to ½ inch (8-12mm) long. The beetle is dark brown to black. The top of the beetle is covered with coarse sculpturing with little or no gloss. The male has a pair of stout forward pointing horns.
This beetle is found on hard shelf fungi, which it eats. It is also found in bark crevices where the fungi are attached. It is active at night. It is especially common on maple trees and logs.
It is also known as the horned darkling beetle.
