HORNED POWDER-POST BEETLE

Scirtes orbiculatus

This beetle is a mottled brown and black color. It is about 1/3rd of an inch long and is narrowly cylindrical in shape and the elytra are parallel sided. The head is bent downward and is concealed from above by the pronotum. The antennas are ten segmented with the last three to four segments forming a club. This beetle has rasp-like teeth in front. It was identified by experts at Bugguide.net.

 

These beetles are usually found in wet areas. This one was photographed along stream trail.
