Ceratophyllum demersum
HORNWORT FAMILY (Ceratophyllaceae)

This submersed aquatic is rootless, floats freely and grows to 3 or more feet in length. The very thin leaves are whorled around its stem and crowded near the stem tips (A,B). The flowers are very inconspicuous and rarely seen. Male and female flowers are found separately. Images “C” and “D” show the male flower clusters.

 

Grows submersed in shallow, still waters of streams and ponds. In Fontenelle Forest, common in the Great Marsh and in deeper water along Stream Trail.
