HYPOXYLON

HYPOXYLON

Hypoxylon sp
XYLARIACEAE (Xylariaceae)

A dark colored flattened fungus about 2-3 inches wide. This mushroom was identified by Dr. Tom Weber a mycologist at the Univ. of Nebraska,Omaha

Hypoxylon is commonly found on dead wood, and is usually one of the earliest species to colonize dead wood.. This particular specimen was found on Hackberry Trail. It is believed to be common at Fontenelle nature center.

It differs from the similar looking Daldinia which is more spherical in shape. If cut open Daldinia shows a series of concentric rings while Hypoxylon does not. This fungus is a genus of the Ascomycetes which means the spores are found in sac like structures.
