ICHNEUMON WASP FAMILY (Ichneumonidae)

This is a small, red wasp about .25 inch long. The wings are clear. The thorax is red and most of the abdomen is red except for a black segment near the tip. The legs are also red. This wasp is a member of the Cremastinae Subfamily. It was identified by experts at the BugGuide website. Most species of Ichneumon wasps cannot be identified to genus or species level from photographs.

The occurrence of this wasp in Fontenelle Forest and Neale Woods is unknown. This wasp has been seen once and photographed at Camp Brewster, Fontenelle Forest in mid-August, 2012. It was attracted to artificial lights.

There are 11 genera and over 320 species north of Mexico. These wasps are endoparasitoids of lepidopteran and sometimes coleopteran larvae.
