This wasp is approximately 1 1/4 inches in length. It is mostly black with brown wings and very long light brown antennae. Its legs are yellowish. It has a very long black and red abdomen. This ichneumon belongs to the subfamily Anamaloninae. Members of this subfamily have a slender appearance. They are orange and black, have long legs and a long laterally compressed abdomen with the first segment being very elongated. This ichneumon was identified to subfamily by a volunteer expert from the BugGuide website.
This wasp is presumed to be rare since it has been seen and photographed only once, on 9/17/08, in Fontenelle Forest. It was seen on Cottonwood trail in a sunny forest opening.
The prey and nesting habits of this wasp are unknown.
