ICHNEUMON WASP FAMILY (Ichneumonidae)

This unidentified female ichneumon wasp is approximately 1 inch in length. It is reddish-brown to brown in color. The legs are red and yellow with some brown on the hind legs. This ichneumon belongs to the subfamily Anamaloninae. Members of this subfamily have a slender appearance. They are orange and black, have long legs and a long laterally compressed abdomen with the first segment being very elongated. This wasp was identified to subfamily by a volunteer from the BugGuide website.

The occurrence of this wasp in Fontenelle Forest and Neale Woods is only known from the photo taken in early June of 2009.

The prey and nesting habits of this wasp are unknown.
