ICHNEUMON WASP FAMILY (Ichneumonidae)

This little wasp is approximately 3/8 inch in length. The head and thorax are black with white markings. The abdomen is mostly red with a black tip. The long black antennae have a broad white mid-stripe, which is typical of a lot of ichneumon wasps. The legs are red and black.

The occurrence of this species in Fontenelle Forest and Neale Woods is unknown. It is known from one observation in early August.

The prey and nesting habits of this wasp are unkown. There are approximately 3,000 species of ichneumon wasps in the United States. Most cannot be identified to genus or species.
