JULIA’S DICYMOLOMIA

Dicymolomia julianalis
CRAMBID SNOUT MOTHS (Crambidae)

The Julia’s Dicymolomia moth has a total length of 3/8 to 1/2 inch. The forewing has reddish-brown bands and a peppery gray median area. The hindwing has a similar coloration with a row of black and silver dots along the terminal line. The abdomen is brownish-orange. The front legs are white with some black spotting.

 

Julia’s Dicymolomia moth was photographed at Fontenelle Forest on June 4 and June 7, 2017 coming to lights. It is considered to be common in its range in southeastern Canada and eastern U.S.

 

The larvae eat the heads of cattails, prickly pear and the eggs of bagworm moths.
