KEELED TREEHOPPER

KEELED TREEHOPPER

Entylia carinata
TREEHOPPER FAMILY (Membracidae)

This treehopper has no common name, so we made one up reflecting the second part of its scientific name: carinata, which means “keeled”. This distinctively shaped hopper comes in different color schemes. Its eggs and larvae are usually found accompanied by ants, usually Carpenter ants, who give them protection. Note the large eye on the front (left) end of this hopper. This treehopper is found on a variety of plants, often on plants belonging to the aster family.

The abundance if this species in Fontenelle Forest and Neale Woods is not yet known. This individual was photographed in Fontenelle Forest on 1JUN13.
