This very colorful caterpillar has a brown head and bright yellow, black and white body as shown in images (A,B and C). Based on images from others, it often strikes the imposing pose shown. Also check the page for the adult moth.

This species sems to be common in our two nature centers, based on the widespread damage to emerging American linden leaves each year. The larva emerge early in spring to not only feed on developing linden leaves (basswood), but also oaks, maples, elms and other trees found in our two nature centers. They feed for about 6 weeks before they enter the soil to pupate.

Caterpillars feed on a wide variety of plants including Evening Primrose and the leaves of apple trees. Larvae burrow into soil to pupate.
