Maple Spanworm Moth

Maple Spanworm Moth

Ennomos magnaria
GEOMETRID MOTH FAMILY (Geometridae)

This moth has a wingspan of 1 3/4 – 2 3/8 inches. It is an orange-tan color with brown spots. The wing edges are a dark brown and are deeply and unevenly scalloped.

This is a common moth in this area from summer through fall. It comes to lights at night and can sometimes be seen sitting on buildings in the morning.

The larvae are known as inchworms. Lacking their middle pairs of prolegs they move by looping rather than crawling. When disturbed they freeze in a stiff posture angled out from their perch and mimic a twig. The larvae eat a variety of trees including ash, basswood, elms, hickories, maples, oaks and cottonwood.
