The cap color is variable ranging from bright orange to orange red to reddish (Photo A). The cap lacks prominent grooves but is faintly lined at the margin and ranges up to 1 inch across. It is convex, becoming flat; not pleated; typically smooth overall and faintly lined at the margin. The gills are not attached to the stem but are close to the stem (B). They are white or with the edges faintly pinkish. The stalk is 1-2 inches long (A,B).

This mushroom is found where oak-hickory woods predominate, in early summer. It grows on leaf litter and woody debris in hardwood forests; growing alone or in groups. It is rare in Fontenelle Forest.
