METALLIC WOOD BORING BEETLE

METALLIC WOOD BORING BEETLES (Buprestidae)

This beetle is about 1/3rd of an inch long. It is black with several yellowish spots on the elytra. In addition there are several small metallic markings on the elytra. The tip is pointed and the sides of this beetle are often parallel making the beetle bullet shaped. The antennas are often threadlike. This beetle was identified with the help of experts at bugguide.net

 

This beetle was photographed on dandelion. Its overall occurrence at Fontenelle Forest is not known.

 

This family of beetles is also known as jewel beetles due to the metallic markings. These beetles are most active in full sunlight when they eat pollen, foliage or tender bark larva of this beetle as well as other buprestids are found boring into wood.
