Mosquitofish

Mosquitofish

Gambusia affinis
POECILIIDAE

This introduced species is about 2 inches long and has an up-turned mouth, with which it gulps air at the surface of water. It bears its young live. This image was identified to species with the help of Daryl Bauer, Nebraska Game and Park Commission.

This image was taken of a specimen trapped and released at the north end of North Stream Trail in Fontenelle Forest. This species of fish was introduced – as their common name implies – to control mosquitos. Their abundance is not yet known.
