MOURNFUL THYRIS

Pseudothyris sepulchralis
WINDOW-WINGED MOTH FAMILY (Thyrididae)

This small moth has a wingspan of 3/4 inch. It is black with bold white spots and marks. The thorax has a white bar across the front and 2 large white spots on the top. The abdomen has 3 white spots. The wings are also black with large median and smaller white spots. The antennae are long, thin and black. The white spots at the margins give the wings a ragged look.

 

This is an uncommon moth that can be seen nectaring at flowers, sitting on low vegetation and mineralizing on damp soil.

 

The larval food plants are clematis and grapevines.
