SKIPPER FAMILY (Hesperiidae)

This skipper has a wingspan of 1 to 1 1/4 inches. The dorsal forewing is brown with a small apricot marking (not visible in photos here) near the male stigma. The leading edge is a tawny color. The dorsal hindwing of the male has a wide black border. The inner wing is a tawny color with a narrow black inverted “V” in the lower half. The ventral hindwing has an inconspicuous band of pale spots. Female is mostly brown with whitish spots in the middle of the dorsal forewing. The caterpillar is a tan color with white mottling, a narrow brown back stripe and a dark brown head.

 

This skipper is probably rare in this area. It has been recorded once in Fontenelle Forest in the Wetlands Center garden in mid-July.

 

Adults nectar on many wild and cultivated flowers. Host plants are grasses including Panic grass.
