This slender flower fly is approximately 3/4 inch (20 mm) in length. The eyes are large and dark red. The thorax is dark brown and shiny. The abdomen is long and cylindrical. It is dark brown and shiny with indistinct narrow yellow or reddish bands. The species is identified by the dark medial band on the wings. The basal and distal portions of the wings are clear.

 

The frequency of occurrence is unknown for this area. The individual shown here was photographed in Fontenelle Forest in early October nectaring on Goldenrod.

 

These are beneficial insects. The larvae of these flies are predators of aphids and scale insects.
