Odontomyia cincta
SOLDIER FLY FAMILY (Stratiomyidae)

This Soldier Fly is approximately 5/8 to 3/4 inches (17-20 mm) long. This fly is a brilliant green color on the face, thorax and abdomen. The top of the thorax and abdomen is black. The eyes are large and dark red. The legs are tan color. The antennae are short and light brown. This fly was identified by BugGuide expert Norm Woodley.

 

The frequency of occurrence in Fontenelle Forest and Neale Woods is not known. A female was photographed in Fontenelle Forest in mid June 2013.

 

There are 31 species in the genus Odontomyia in North America. The adults take nectar from flowers. The larvae are aquatic and feed on algae. The eggs are laid at the edge of a pond or stream.
