OMMATIUS TIBIALIS

OMMATIUS TIBIALIS

Ommatius tibialis
ROBBER FLY FAMILY (Asilidae)

This species is approximately 5/8 inch (15 mm) in length. It is mostly brown with large reddish eyes. It has some scraggly blond hair on the face. The wings are a clear brown and extend almost to the end of the abdomen. The legs are sharply marked with black and orange. The antennae are black and slightly feathery or moth-like.

The frequency of occurrence is not currently known. The individual in Photo A was photographed in Fontenelle Forest in late June.

The branching antennae is distinctive for the genus Ommatius. No other North American robberfly has this characteristic.
