Except for a few, most of the more than 1000 aphid species found in North America can’t be readily identified by sight or photograph alone. We show here a few of the color variations found so far. The dark ones in the first image can be seen in various states of development. In the second image a carpenter ant is tending to a gray variety of aphids. Aphids shed their skin periodically as they grow. The aphids in the third image were photographed on the floodplain on a mustard in mid – April 2012, the spring after the flood.

Several types of aphids are quite common in our two nature centers, especially in late summer. Many are seen being tended by large ants.
