These images represent a sample of the many species of mosses found in Fontenelle Forest. It is assumed that most of these occur in Neale Woods as well. These mosses have not yet been identified because most require expert analysis in a lab with a dissecting microscope, which is beyond the scope of this web site. Positive identification often requires the tiny leaves to be sliced very thin to show individual cell structure.
Most of the mosses found grow on fallen logs; some grow on the ground. Mosses curl up in dry conditions, but freshen up quickly after rain or wet snow. Several species can sometimes be found growing together in the same space.
