PAIUTE DANCER

PAIUTE DANCER

Argia alberta
POND DAMSEL FAMILY (Coenagrionidae)

This dancer is approximately 1 1/4” in length. The male has a blue thorax with a black median stripe and forked humeral stripes. The abdomen is black with narrow blue rings except for segments 8, 9 and 10 which are entirely blue. The eyes are blue with a black spot. The females are polymorphic, as they can be either all brown or have a brown abdomen and light blue thorax and face. She also has a black forked humeral stripe. The top of the abdomen is mostly black. The sides are tan to light brown with dark pointed marks and dark rings. The eyes are gray with brown spots on top. The wings are clear with dark brown stigmas.

This species is probably rare in the Fontenelle Forest lowlands. The only individual seen was the one photographed (Photo A) along the boardwalk by the Wetlands Center. Also look for them along the stream and the Great Marsh.

The Paiute Dancer female is similar to other dancers including the Variable Dancer, although the female of the Variable Dancer apparently is not polymorphic. Egg-laying occurs in tandem with the male.
