PALE-VEINED ISTURGIA

This small moth has a wingspan of about 1 inch. The forewing is gray to grayish brown with 3 dark brown squarish spots spaced along the costa. The veins are distinctively outlined with white or pale yellow. The hindwings are similar to the forewings but there is a single dark line crossing the wing. This moth was identified by a volunteer expert from the BugGuide website.

 

The frequency of occurrence of the Pale-veined Isturgia at Fontenelle Forest or Neale Woods is not known, however, it is known to be uncommon to rare in its range in eastern North America. It’s been recorded at Fontenelle Forest Nature Center and Camp Brewster from early to late April. The adults fly from April to June and are attracted to artificial lights.

 

The larval food plants are unknown. This moth was formerly named Pale-veined Enconista, (Enconista dislocaria).
