A robust bee fly, mostly brown with tan pubescence on the front part of the thorax. The basal 2/3 of the wing is dark brown with the distal 1/3 clear. abdomen is brown with distinguishing dark bands on the middle segments.

 

The individual shown is the first one photographed in Fontenelle Forest. According to BugGuided data this species ranges from Nebraska northward and eastward. The frequency of occurrence in this area is unknown.

 

Adults prefer to nectar on Black-eyed Susan flowers. Larvae are parasites of ground-nesting bees.
