Description
As the common name implies, this species of ants is found, usually in great numbers, on and around pavement. They were identified with the help of Dr. James Trager, a volunteer expert, via the BugGuide web site. This species was introduced from Europe a long time ago. The brown to black worker ants are relatively small, about 1/4 inch or 5 mm long. But as with other ants, the males and queens are much larger and have wings.
Occurrence
These images were taken the end of June on pavement just ourside the Fontenelle Forest Visitors Center. They had also been seen at that same location in past years. They are known to eat about anything, from dropped food, to insects, to seeds. Their occurrence in our two nature centers is probably restricted to pavement, their normal habitat, and not in woodlands or floodplains.
