This moss is first noticed in April by its tiny green orbs with pointed tops (operculum covered by the calyptra) (A,B). Within a month these capsules turn yellow, then orange (C,D). By May each tiny capsule looses its operculum to release spores (E). This last image was taken in the field of a held clump of soil/moss to make a colorful ‘moss bouquet.’

This moss seems to like compacted ground. It is noticeable in April and May, found in small mats only in a short stretch along the sides of Stream Trail in Fontenelle Forest.

The scientific name includes “pyriforme” which means pear-shaped and reflects the shape of the tiny capsules.
