This native aquatic plant – but not native to Nebraska – grew at one time in a fenced enclosure at Camp Brewster, where it was planted. It has a blue spike of small, blue flowers and mostly heart-shaped leaves on stalks originating from an underwater stem as shown in image (A).
This species is native to states south and east of Nebraska. It was planted in a fenced pond at Camp Brewster where it grew for a time, but is no longer present. Flowering occurs from June to October.
The seeds are in the form of nuts (not yet shown); they reportedly can be eaten like nuts. Deer are known to browse the leaves.
