This native aquatic plant – but not native to Nebraska – can be seen in the fenced enclosure at Camp Brewster, where it was planted a few years ago. It has a blue spike of small, blue flowers and mostly heart-shaped leaves on stalks from an underwater stem as shown in image (A).

This species was planted and thriving at Camp Brewster. It flowers in late spring. It is native to the eastern United States.

The seeds are in the form of nuts (not yet shown); they reportedly can be eaten like nuts. Deer are known to browse the leaves.
