PILOSE CLERID BEETLE

PILOSE CLERID BEETLE

Chariessa pilosa
CLERID BEETLES (Cleridae)

This beetle is black with red and yellow on the head and is about 1/3 to ½ inch long (7.5-13.0 mm). It has antler like antenna. It is covered with short hairs.

It is found on hardwoods and conifer trees. It was seen at Camp Brewster coming to lights at night. Its overall occurrence at Fontenelle Forest is not known but it is common in the eastern U.S.

Larvae feed on eggs, larvae and adults of wood-boring beetles in galleries of various hardwoods. Adults are often observed feeding on insects attracted to freshly cut logs during the summer. This is one of the most common clerids in eastern forests. Adults are diurnal but come to lights. It is considered to be a mimic of fireflies.
