This grasshopper may be found in sizes from 1-2 inches (25-50 mm) long, depending on sex and development. It is one of the few species of Melanoplus which may be safely identified from a photograph. Volunteer experts at BugGuide verified this particular specimen as a female. The color pattern of its legs helps in its identification. Notice the red coloration on the underside of the femur (Photo 2).

This species ranges widely throughout eastern and central North America. It is generally considered rare, perhaps because of its habit of living in trees. It is known to favor oak savannas, which are present in both Fontenelle Forest and Neale Woods. They can be found July through November in much of their range.

Females lay eggs in holes or crevices of trunks of pine or deciduous trees.
