Like the similar Common Garter Snake, this snake comes in different color forms, but all have three yellow or orange longitudinal stripes on a light brown to black background color.  Most have one or two small yellow dots on the top of the head.  The Plains Garter Snake grows to about 40 inches (100 cm) long; they are less aggressive than their relative, the Common Garter Snake.  They also release a foul-smelling liquid when in danger.  Positive identification is best left to an expert.
