This is one of our largest grasshoppers, with a wingspan of up to 4 inches. It lives in tall grass prairies and was photographed, captured and released by biologist Tony Palmer, to show the identifying features of this species. The identity of this grasshopper was verified by descriptions and images found on the BugGuide web site. The wing pattern, color (usually yellow) and structure of its hind legs determine the species.

This specimen was photographed in the planted prairie of Camp Brewster in early June, 2013. Other individuals were also seen there. But they seem to be still active somewhat later in the year than usual for Nebraska. However, the growing season seems to have been delayed for a few weeks this year, which might explain their presence later than usual.
