STAG BEETLE FAMILY (Lucanidae)
This beetle is red brown to black in color.The antenna are distinctive each being ten segmented with a comblike club. Stag beetles usually range from 3/5 to 2 5/8 inches long but members of this genus are small ranging in size from 1/5 to 3/5 of an inch long.
Adults are attracted to lights and tree sap while larva develop in rotting wood. The larva of all species bore in dead or decaying wood of logs or stumps. Their occurrence in Fontenelle Forest is unknown.
A genus of 5 small species. They are of little economic importance.
