Packard’s Wave Moth has a wingspan of approximately 1 7/8 inches. The wings are light brown with a reddish tint. The discal spots are hollow or filled with white. The AM and PM lines are distinct gray dots. This moth was identified by volunteer experts at the BugGuide website. The caterpillar is a twig mimic. It is brown speckled with many light colored dots. It grows to about 7/8 inch.
This moth is probably common in Fontenelle Forest and Neale Woods. The adult moths fly from mid-summer to early fall. It ranges in the eastern U.S. from Maine to Floriad, west to Texas and Nebraska.
The larval food is oak leaves. This moth belongs to the subfamily Sterrhinae which includes about 2800 described species worldwide.
