PYRALID MOTH FAMILY (Pyralidae)

The Posturing Arta Moth has a wingspan of 5/8 inch (15 mm). The forewing is reddish all over with whitish to tan undulating median and post medial lines which widen at the costa. The terminal line is a series of black dashes. The hindwing is light brown with darker brown veins. On the middle pair of legs the tibias have thick tufts of hair. Members of this subfamily (Chrysauginae) characteristically sit propped up on the middle legs at a 45 degree angle

 

The frequency of occurrence of this moth at Fontenelle Forest and Neale Woods is not known. It has been photographed at Fontenelle Nature Center once in mid-July 2015. Adults fly from July through August. It ranges from Florida to Massachusetts west to Oklahoma and Nebraska.

 

The host food plant is unknown
