This native biennial or short-lived perennial grows from 1 to 2 feet tall (B). Most leaves are basal and oval (C). The few upper stem leaves are smaller and usually deeply lobed (D). Several daisy-like flowers 1/2 to 1 inch in diameter form a cluster at the top of the stem (A,B). The flower has 8 or more yellow petal-like ray florets surrounding the yellow-orange disk (A). Both ray and disk florets produce seeds with attached showy, plume-like hairs.

Found on drier upland prairie sites, flowering in May and June. It is uncommon in prairies at Neale Woods.

Another common name for this plant is Groundsel. Toxic alkaloids in plants from this genus produce blood clots in the liver and have caused deaths in livestock.
